Applications
If you woke up this morning thanks to the alarm on your smartphone, or if you like watching videos or playing games on your tablet, you are already using applications. You probably know them by their shorter, more common name: apps.
What is an Application?
An application, or app, is a software program that lets you do things. That's a simple definition, but it's true! Apps are the tools you use to make your computer or device useful and fun. You'll find apps on all of your devices, including smartphones, tablets, and computers.
Types of Apps and Their Uses
While the term "app" is often associated with mobile phones, it's important to know that the programs on your computer are also apps. They can generally be broken down into a few categories.
Mobile Apps
These are apps that run on your smartphone or tablet. They are designed to make many things in life more convenient.
Example: If you're looking for a place to buy coffee, an app like Google Maps can use your phone's GPS to determine your current location and then recommend nearby coffee shops. This is an example of how an app can use the specific features of a mobile device to be helpful.
Computer Apps (or Desktop Applications)
The programs and applications you use on your computer are also considered apps. You are probably already using more of them than you realize!
Examples:
- If you've ever used Microsoft Word or Google Docs to create a document, you've used an app.
- When you use a web browser (like Chrome, Firefox, or Safari) to visit a website or check your email, you are using an app.
- Even the calculator or solitaire game on your computer is an app!
How to Get Apps
There are two main ways that apps get onto your devices:
- Pre-installed Apps: Many devices come with a set of useful apps already installed. For example, your new computer will likely come with a web browser and an email client already on it. Your phone will come with apps for making calls, sending messages, and taking photos.
- Downloading and Buying Apps: You can easily add more apps to your device. Most smartphones and tablets have an "App Store" where you can browse, download, and often buy new apps. For computers, you can usually download apps directly from the developer's website.
Apps are all about helping you communicate, be productive, and have fun. Whether you need to write a letter, manage your schedule, edit a photo, or play a game, there's likely an app for that. With so many possibilities, you're sure to find several apps that are perfect for the things you want to do.
